Founded in 2000, Berryessa Gap Vineyards is located in Winters, California, Yolo County. Its vineyards lie on the east slope, and beneath a break in California’s coastal range, known to locals as the Berryessa Gap, a prominent and beautiful landmark. Through this break, a breath of the coastal influence greets the mornings, and brilliant sunsets end the days.

Berryessa Gap’s connection to the land runs deep with farming roots going back several generations. Dan Martinez, Sr., father of the owners of Berryessa Gap, was a first generation farmer of Spanish immigrants. After establishing a successful orchard business in Winters, he partnered with winemaker and wine historian Ernest Peninou in 1969 to create a grapevine rootstock nursery that would become renown in Napa and Sonoma Valley vineyards and beyond. Yolo Hills Viticultural Society, now operating as Martinez Orchards, helped grow the California wine industry and it is from these solid roots that Berryessa Gap Vineyards hails.

Through the characteristics of Berryessa Gap’s Coble Ranch vineyard, which has similar terroir to the hotter and dryer climate of the Mediterranean, the winery produces fine red and white wines such as Petite Sirah, Tempranillo, Zinfandel, Barbera, Malbec, Albariño, Verdejo, and Sauvignon Blanc, to name a few.

The winery presents its wine in four collections. Its Estate Collection wines are made from grapes grown locally at the Coble Ranch vineyard. These grapes come from Martinez Orchards’ rootstock. The wines are primarily single varietal and reflect Berryessa Gap’s winemaking philosophy: allow each varietal’s characteristics to shine. The Gozar! Collection (Spanish for ‘to enjoy’) is an homage to the owners’ Hispanic roots and all wines are very approachable and are made from Coble Ranch grapes. The Salengo Collection is a small-lot production of wines that winemaker, Nicole Salengo, chooses to make from Coble Ranch vineyard grapes and sourced fruit. Her first release was a 2018 Grenache followed by a 2020 Pinot Noir Rosé. Last, the Highway 128 Collection are wines created in partnership with respected growers and producers along this iconic wine route. Each partnership is based on the world-class varietals grown and wines produced in the numerous, unique microclimates that exist along this 140-mile highway.
