Guest Post – CSA Coming Soon to El Dorado County
El Dorado County will soon have access to a multi-farmer CSA group that will distribute organic produce from El Dorado and Sacramento county farmers. Headquartered in Camino, CA, the group will have dropoff locations throughout both counties. Existing farmers markets may be used as dropoff locations, as well as additional locations for new farmers and subscribers.
Doug Alberts, founder of the program, is also the owner of Green Acres Farmers Market – a year-round hybrid market in Apple Mountain. Alberts also runs Green Acres Organic Farm, which has roots going back over 30 years as one of the first organic farms in the Apple Mountain area.
Alberts reports that signing up farmers to participate in the program may be more challenging than finding eager subscribers. He points to a recent statement from United Natural Foods International that the lack of farms is becoming a crisis in the United States. To address the issue, Alberts is including both counties in the program to ensure that there will be enough farmers involved.
Hungry residents can look for subscriber information starting in May for the June-November 2015 distribution season. Subscriptions fees will run around $25 per box.
