Farm-to-Fork Claims World Record
The 2015 Farm-to-Fork Celebration got off to a “fresh” start earlier this week with a record-setting event that benefited the entire community. To usher in this year’s festivities, the team partnered with the Sacramento Food Bank and Family Services to host a massive food drive on Sept. 9 designed to collect donations of local fresh foods and vegetables that would in turn be donated to those in need within our communities.
Farm-to-Fork engaged Guinness World Records earlier in the year to determine in a previous record had ever been achieved; Guinness reported that it hadn’t and challenged Farm-to-Fork and the Food Bank to raise at least 25,000 lbs. to claim the record.
Working with partners like Raley’s, General Produce, Produce Express, the California Pear Advisory Board and the Sacramento Natural Foods Co-op, the group convened a lineup of trucks along Capitol Mall packed with fresh produce. At the same time, the Sacramento Food Bank was traveling throughout the region’s farms picking up donations. Not to be outdone, members of the Sacramento community headed down to Capitol Mall in their cars, on foot or by bike to deliver their own fresh contributions.
Volunteers from the Sac Event Crew helped to weigh and tally the donations at the Food Bank’s distribution center throughout the day. And after more than 24 hours of travel mishaps, the Guinness adjudicator finally arrived in Sacramento just in time to declare that Farm-to-Fork hadn’t just set the record – we had “crushed” the original goal and collected a staggering 170,923.8 lbs. of fresh fruits and vegetables. The following day, the food was distributed by the Food Bank and more than 30 partner agencies across the region.
Farm-to-fork would like to thank our valued partners for helping us to bring the bounty of the Sacramento region to every fork in Sacramento. The success of this food drive captures the incredible spirit of the Sacramento region and the true meaning of farm-to-fork!
