First Foods Dinner

Before there was farm-to-fork there were First Foods.

The First Foods Dinner, sponsored by the Tending and Gathering Garden Committee of the Cache Creek Conservancy, will highlight traditional indigenous foods served with a contemporary flair.

The evening begins with a gathering time featuring hors-d’oeuvres of roasted quail and salmon dip with salmon skin crisps. A tour of the Tending and Gathering Garden at the Nature Preserve will expand your understanding of how California tribes used various plants for both food and basketry. Baskets and other weaving by Native American artisans will be on display as well.

The three-course meal begins with venison stew, followed by miner salad with green strawberries and the entrée is salmon. Dessert features Indian fried bread with honey. No alcoholic beverages will be served at the dinner, as alcohol is not an indigenous drink. A variety of teas typical of a California Native American feast will be served. Guest chef is Scott Ostrander, formerly with the Inn at Park Winters.
